Why the Right Products Matter More with Extensions

Extensions are an investment. At Kinsley + Mane, our Natural Beaded Row extensions start at a significant price point, and that's before the cost of ongoing maintenance. The last thing you want is for the wrong shampoo to shorten the life of your extensions or damage the bonds holding them in place.

Here's what most people don't realize: extension hair is different from your natural hair in one critical way. It's not receiving nutrients from your scalp. Your natural hair gets oils, moisture, and proteins from the follicle. Extension hair doesn't get any of that. It relies entirely on the products you put on it. That's why using the right products isn't optional with extensions. It's essential.

As an authorized Oribe salon that specializes in NBR extensions, we've tested every product on extension hair. Here's exactly what we recommend and why.

The Best Shampoo and Conditioner for Extensions

Our number one recommendation for extension clients: Oribe Gold Lust Shampoo and Gold Lust Conditioner. This line provides the intense moisture that extension hair needs while being gentle enough to not weaken or deteriorate bond points.

The Gold Lust Shampoo cleanses without stripping. This matters because harsh sulfate shampoos can break down the adhesive in tape-in extensions and dry out the bonds in beaded methods. Gold Lust is sulfate-free and won't compromise your attachment method.

The Gold Lust Conditioner is rich enough to keep extension hair soft and manageable. Without proper conditioning, extension hair gets dry, tangled, and matted, especially around the bond points where your natural hair meets the extensions. A good conditioner prevents this.

How to wash with extensions:

  1. Wet hair thoroughly. Never pile extensions on top of your head to wash. Let them hang naturally.
  2. Apply shampoo to the scalp only and massage gently. Let the suds run down through the extensions as you rinse. Don't scrub the bonds.
  3. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends. Avoid the bonds entirely. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then rinse.
  4. Gently squeeze out water. Never wring or twist extensions.

Detangling: The Most Important Step You Might Be Skipping

Detangling is the single most important part of extension care. More extensions are damaged by aggressive brushing than by any product. And the right detangling product makes brushing easier, safer, and faster.

We recommend Oribe Run-Through Detangling Primer for every single extension client. Spray it through wet hair after washing, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends where tangles form. Then start brushing from the ends and work your way up, holding the hair above the bonds so you're not pulling on them.

Run-Through is lightweight enough that it doesn't weigh extensions down, but slippery enough that tangles release easily. It also provides light heat protection, so if you're going straight from the shower to the blow dryer, you're covered.

For stubborn tangles, apply Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream to the tangled section, let it sit for a minute, and then gently work through with a wide-tooth comb. This cream is rich enough to lubricate the tangle without being heavy enough to build up on the extensions.

Keeping Extensions Hydrated Between Washes

Because extension hair doesn't receive natural oils, it dries out faster than your natural hair. You need to supplement moisture between washes, especially at the ends.

Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil is our go-to recommendation. Apply 2-3 drops to the ends of your extensions every night before bed. This keeps them hydrated, prevents the dry, straw-like texture that neglected extensions develop, and adds beautiful shine.

For weekly deep conditioning, use the Gold Lust Transformative Masque from mid-length to ends. Leave it on for 10-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This is like a spa day for your extensions and will significantly extend their lifespan.

Important: Apply oil and masque to the hair below the bonds only. Getting heavy products on or near the bonds can cause slippage or buildup that leads to matting.

Styling Products That Won't Damage Bonds

Not all styling products are safe for extensions. Anything with a high alcohol content can dry out bonds and extension hair. Anything too heavy or waxy can build up around the attachment points and cause matting.

Safe styling products we recommend:

Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray for heat protection before blow-drying. It's lightweight, won't build up, and extends your blowout so you can wash less frequently (which is better for extensions).

Dry Texturizing Spray for volume and texture at the roots. It's also a great dry shampoo alternative between washes. Just avoid spraying directly on the bonds.

Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream for smoothing and finishing. Light enough that it won't weigh down extensions, but effective enough to tame flyaways and add shine.

Superfine Strong Hairspray for hold. It's firm enough to keep your style but brushable, so you're not creating tangles when you brush it out at night.

Products to Absolutely Avoid with Extensions

Anything with heavy silicone buildup: Silicones coat the hair and create buildup that's hard to remove from extension hair (which you can't treat as aggressively as natural hair). Some Oribe products contain light silicones that rinse out easily, and those are fine. Heavy, dimethicone-based products from other brands are not.

Clarifying shampoos: These are too stripping for extension hair and can dry out the bonds. If you need to remove buildup, use the Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub on your scalp only, not on the extensions.

Heavy oils and butters on the bonds: Coconut oil, castor oil, and similar heavy oils are great for natural hair but can cause bond slippage. Keep all heavy products below the bond line.

Alcohol-based products: Some cheap hairsprays and styling products use high concentrations of drying alcohol. These strip moisture from extension hair rapidly. Oribe products use minimal or no drying alcohol.

Special Notes for Natural Beaded Row Extensions

NBR extensions have specific care requirements because of how they're attached. The beaded row system is gentle on your natural hair (one of the reasons we chose this method), but the beads need to be kept clean and free of buildup.

Use a very small amount of shampoo around the bead area and rinse thoroughly. Conditioner and styling products should always go below the beads. When brushing near the beads, hold the weft with one hand and brush below it with the other to avoid pulling.

Following this product routine consistently will keep your NBR extensions looking beautiful for their full lifespan. We see a direct correlation between clients who follow the routine and clients who get the longest, healthiest wear from their extensions.
