Article: Do Hair Extensions Work on Naturally Curly Hair?

Do Hair Extensions Work on Naturally Curly Hair?

Curly hair and extensions have a reputation for not getting along. That reputation is wrong more often than it is right. Your curl pattern is not what decides whether the install works. The plan is.

Curly clients are a regular part of our books at the Bend chair inside Tangerine Hair Salon. The ones who leave happiest are the ones who let us slow down at the consultation instead of rushing straight to booking. If you want the full picture of a first visit beyond the extensions themselves, what to expect at your first visit with us walks through the whole process.

Why Curly Hair Changes Our Approach to Extensions

Yes, extensions work on curly hair, as long as the install is built around your texture instead of a default plan. We use less hair per section and place it lower on the head. We match the extension hair to your curls both wet and dry, then cut the shape in while it is dry. Curl pattern is not the problem. Guessing is.

We hold certifications in several installation methods, and from years behind the chair we built our own way of installing extensions. It is matched to your head shape and hair density, not one default applied to everyone.

Our method attaches to a small section of your own hair without heat or glue touching your curls. Nothing has to be melted off later. That matters, because curly ends run drier than straight hair and the cuticle lifts more easily under heat.

Texture works in your favor too. Curls tend to hold an install more securely than straight hair does, so it stays put through wash day, a workout, or a bike ride on Phil's Trail.

How We Match Extension Hair to Your Curl Pattern

There are two ways we match hair to a curl pattern. The right one depends on how you wear your hair on a normal day, not on a special occasion.

The first route is hair that already matches your curl pattern. The second is smoother hair, most often Russian hair, that you style to match your curls every time you style your own.

  • Who it suits. Hair matched to your curl: Wash-and-go curls, styled with little touch-up. Smoother hair you style to match (Russian hair): Clients who diffuse, wand, or blow out a few times a week.
  • Day-to-day wear. Hair matched to your curl: Blends without extra styling. Smoother hair you style to match (Russian hair): Needs a curling step to match your natural texture.
  • Styling time. Hair matched to your curl: Little to none once matched. Smoother hair you style to match (Russian hair): A few extra minutes with a wand or diffuser.
  • As it grows out. Hair matched to your curl: Holds its shape between move-ups. Smoother hair you style to match (Russian hair): Reshapes easily at each move-up appointment.

Most of our styling clients choose the smoother route. Our K + M Genius Wefts are Russian hair, and in our experience they hold a wand curl through several days. You curl your own hair and the extension hair together, and they behave like one head of hair.

If you wash, apply product, and walk out with your curls untouched, the extension hair has to match you wet, not dry. This is the step most salons skip. Curl pattern shifts with water. A curl that looks loose and stretched while damp can spring up tighter as it dries, and the ends often coil tighter than the roots. So we hold the extension hair against your curls damp, let both dry the way you dry them, and check again. We are watching for two things. Does the extension hair tighten at the same rate as yours, and do the ends land in the same place? Hair that matches wet but relaxes looser than yours when dry will show at the ends. If we cannot get a close match to how your hair dries on its own, we say so at the consultation. We would rather turn down the install than hand you hair that shows.

Color makes the same difference. Shadow between curls makes one flat shade look pasted on, so we blend dimensional color into the extension hair and, when it helps, into your own hair in the same visit. Getting your color and extensions done together means the two do not compete for an appointment slot. One team is responsible for how the whole head reads.

What Happens During Your Install

Your install starts before you sit in the chair.

You text us a photo of your hair the way you wear it day to day, plus one photo of what you want. We send back a plan, and only after that do you book. That step alone prevents most of the mismatched results we get asked to fix, because it catches a texture problem before any hair is ordered. What to bring up at your consultation covers what we ask and why.

A few things change for curly hair once you are in the chair:

  1. We plan placement lower on the head than we would for straight hair, since curl volume already sits high and needs less help.
  2. We use less hair per section. One or two sections often does on curly hair what would take three sections on fine, straight hair.
  3. We section around how your curls fall dry, not on a fixed grid, so nothing lands across a natural part.
  4. We cut the shape in dry, styled the way you wear it. Cutting curls wet is how ends end up blunt.

That last step is where most curly installs go right or wrong. Once the hair is in, we style everything the way you will walk out the door: diffused if you diffuse, wand-curled if you wand. Then we cut. Not one straight line across the bottom, but curl by curl, a little at a time, from where each curl falls. We check the length from the front and from both sides. Curls sit at different lengths around the head, and a cut that looks even from behind can hang past your own hair at the face. The goal is extension hair that ends where your curls end, so nothing reads as a second layer underneath.

Plan on a few hours for a first install. You leave styled and blended, and we walk you through diffusing with the extensions in. About two weeks in, everything settles and most clients stop thinking about the hair at all. You can see how these installs look on curly clients a few weeks in on our Instagram.

Move-ups run shorter, since the plan is already built around your head, but they are not a quick tighten. Your own hair has grown, so the attachment point has moved down from where we placed it. We take the extension hair out, check your natural growth and how the curl at the root is behaving, and rebuild the plan around where your hair sits now. If your styling or color has changed since the install, we recheck the match wet and dry before the hair goes back in. Then we place it fresh, lower and lighter where your curls need it, and check the shape dry once it is back in.

What People Get Wrong With Curly Extensions

Most of the fixes we make started somewhere else, and they trace back to a small number of habits.

  • Wrong hair texture. Straight hair on a curly client separates from your own curls fast, and Bend's dry air makes that separation show sooner than it would somewhere more humid.
  • Too much hair. Curls carry their own volume already. Extension amounts sized for straight hair add weight that pulls on the section holding it.
  • Conditioner near the attachment point. Conditioner belongs on mid-lengths and ends. Near the attachment, it loosens the hold and the extensions start to slip.
  • Skipping the night braid. Curls tangle on their own. Curls with extensions behind them tangle around the attachment point, and morning detangling turns into breakage.
  • Letting the install run past its move-up window. Curly hair grows the same as straight hair. An install left too long pulls on new growth instead of sitting where it should.
  • Matching hair while it's dry only. Curl pattern shifts with water. Extension hair matched dry and never checked wet can look right in the chair and wrong after the first wash.

Who Isn't a Good Fit for Our Method

We say no more often than people expect, and we would rather say it before an install than after one.

  • Your hair is shorter than shoulder length. There isn't enough length to cover the attachment point once curls spring up.
  • Your ends are over-processed and breaking. We get the hair healthy first, then add weight to it.
  • You're shedding more than normal for you. We pause, talk it through, and revisit later.
  • Your curl is tight and unstyled day to day, and we can't source a matching texture. Smoother hair on tight coils shows at the ends, plain and simple.
  • You won't detangle and braid at night. This isn't a judgment call. It's the difference between an install that holds up over months and one that thins out in weeks.
  • You want the extensions to stay in without ever coming back for a move-up. Curly hair grows, and the plan has to move with it. That schedule isn't optional.
  • You're hoping the extensions will look exactly like a photo of someone else's curl pattern. We can get close to yours. We can't give you someone else's texture.

If you're on the fence, send the photo anyway. More people than you'd think turn out to be a yes with one small change to the plan.

How to Care for Curly Extensions in Bend's Dry Air

Moisture on a schedule, no tension on the attachment point, and move-ups on time. That's the whole routine.

We send every client home with an Oribe routine built for their texture, since we're an authorized Oribe salon and it's what we use at the chair. Cleanse your scalp and the attachment point, condition from mid-length to ends, and work a leave-in or oil into the extension hair every few days. We see mineral buildup on extension hair here, so we recommend a clarifying wash every couple of weeks to keep it off. If you travel often, our picks for travel-size Oribe products covers what's worth packing so the routine doesn't lapse on the road.

Detangle from the ends up, always, in sections. Sleep in one or two loose braids, on silk if you have it. We book move-ups at six to eight weeks as our standard for curly clients, and we check the placement before it starts to shift. For the fuller list of daily habits that keep any texture healthy between visits, our guide to healthy hair habits is worth the read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still wear my curls natural with extensions?

Yes, as long as the extension hair is matched to your curl when it's wet, not just dry. That's the deciding factor, so we test the match damp and dry before we order any hair. If you diffuse or wand your curls instead, smoother hair will blend once it's styled.

Will the attachment point show on curly hair?

No, not when the plan is built for curly hair specifically. We place it lower and use less hair per section, since curl volume covers what would show on straight hair. After about two weeks everything settles and sits flush against your head.

How much extension hair do curly clients usually need?

Less than straight-haired clients, in our experience. One or two sections often does what takes three sections on fine, straight hair. Adding too much hair is the most common mistake we correct on curly heads, since the extra weight pulls on the section holding it.

Can I heat style the extension hair?

Yes. The Russian hair in our K + M Genius Wefts takes heat styling and, in our experience, holds a wand curl for days. Use a heat protectant, keep the tool off the attachment point, and let the hair cool before you touch it.

Do the aftercare rules change between the Bay Area and Bend?

The rules stay the same, but the schedule tightens here. Bend's dry air pulls moisture out of extension hair faster, and we see more mineral buildup on it here. So we recommend more frequent moisture and a clarifying wash every couple of weeks. We hold move-ups to six to eight weeks as our standard in this climate.

What if my curls don't match my inspiration photo?

We tell you before you book, not after. Curl pattern varies a lot even within the same head, so we match to how your hair falls, not to a photo of someone else's texture. If the match isn't close, we say so and offer what will realistically work instead.

How long does a curly install take to feel normal?

Most clients stop thinking about it around two weeks in, once everything settles against the head. The first few days take a little extra care while you learn to sleep and wash around it. That adjustment is normal for every client, curly or straight.

Ready to Find Out If Your Curls Are a Fit?

Text us a photo of your hair the way you wear it on a normal day, plus one inspiration photo. We'll send back an honest plan for your texture. If it's a yes, book your extension consultation at our Bend chair inside Tangerine Hair Salon. If it's a not yet, we'll tell you what to work on first.
