Oribe Clarifying Shampoo Review: How Often Should You Really Clarify?

Clarifying Is Essential, But Most People Do It Wrong
There are two types of people: those who never clarify their hair, and those who clarify way too often. Both groups are making their hair worse. Let's talk about what clarifying actually does, why you need it, and how Oribe Clarifying Shampoo (The Cleanse) does it better than anything else we've used.
What Clarifying Actually Means
Clarifying shampoo is a deep-cleaning shampoo that removes buildup. And we mean all buildup. Product residue, mineral deposits from hard water, excess oil, environmental pollution, chlorine. Everything that accumulates on your hair and scalp over time that your regular shampoo doesn't fully remove.
Think of it like this: your regular shampoo is a daily face wash. A clarifying shampoo is a deep exfoliation. You wouldn't exfoliate every day, but you need it periodically to reset your skin. Same concept applies to your hair.
Oribe The Cleanse: Our Go-To Clarifier
The Cleanse by Oribe is the only clarifying shampoo we use in the salon. And the reason is simple: it cleans deeply without destroying your hair in the process.
Most clarifying shampoos are essentially detergent. They strip everything off your hair, including the natural oils and moisture your hair needs. You end up with hair that's technically clean but feels like straw. That's not what we want.
The Cleanse removes buildup while preserving moisture. Your hair feels clean, light, and refreshed after using it, but not dry or stripped. That balance is incredibly hard to achieve in a clarifying formula, and Oribe nailed it.
How It Feels
The lather is generous and satisfying. You can literally feel it cutting through buildup as you work it through your hair. When you rinse, your hair feels lighter. That's the buildup coming off. Follow with your regular conditioner and you'll notice your hair looks brighter, moves better, and holds styles more effectively.
How Often Should You Clarify?
Here's where professional opinion actually matters, because the answer isn't the same for everyone.
Every 1-2 Weeks
This frequency is right for you if:
- You use a lot of styling products daily (hairspray, dry shampoo, texturizing spray)
- You live in an area with hard water
- You swim regularly in chlorinated pools
- Your hair feels heavy or dull despite regular washing
- Your scalp gets flaky or itchy from buildup
Every 2-4 Weeks
This is the sweet spot for most of our clients:
- You use moderate amounts of styling products
- You wash your hair 2-3 times per week
- Your water quality is decent
- You want to maintain product performance without over-stripping
Once a Month or Less
Clarify less frequently if:
- You use minimal styling products
- Your hair is naturally dry or damaged
- You have color-treated hair (especially vivids)
- Your hair already feels clean with regular shampoo
Signs You Need to Clarify
Your hair will tell you when it needs a clarifying wash. Watch for these signs:
- Your products aren't working as well. If your regular shampoo doesn't lather like it used to, or your conditioner doesn't seem to penetrate, buildup is the likely culprit.
- Your hair looks dull. Buildup coats the hair shaft and blocks light reflection. That's why your hair looks flat and lifeless even right after washing.
- Your scalp is itchy or flaky. Product and oil buildup on the scalp can mimic dandruff. Before you reach for a medicated shampoo, try clarifying first.
- Color looks muddy. Buildup over colored hair makes the color look muted and dull.
- Hair feels heavy or weighed down. If your normally bouncy hair seems flat and limp, buildup is weighing it down.
The Pre-Color Clarify
At Kinsley + Mane, we clarify every client's hair before a color service. This is standard professional practice because buildup on the hair shaft prevents color from penetrating evenly. If you're coming in for color, we'll use The Cleanse to create a clean canvas for your color to deposit on.
This is one reason salon color looks better and lasts longer than box color. Pros prep the hair before applying color. That prep starts with clarifying.
A Note on Color-Treated Hair
Yes, clarifying can remove some color. That's an honest truth that a lot of brands won't tell you. But here's the reality: if your color is well-applied and properly maintained, a monthly clarifying wash will remove minimal color while making a noticeable difference in how your hair looks and feels.
The trade-off is worth it. Dull, buildup-coated colored hair looks worse than slightly-less-saturated hair that's clean and shiny. And The Cleanse is gentler than most clarifiers, so the color impact is minimal.
Our Recommendation
Every bathroom should have a clarifying shampoo. Oribe The Cleanse is ours because it's effective without being destructive. Use it at the right frequency for your hair type, and watch your other products start performing better, your color look brighter, and your hair feel lighter and healthier.
If you're unsure how often you should be clarifying, ask us at your next appointment. We'll look at your hair, evaluate your buildup situation, and give you a specific recommendation.
