When clients call our Alamo studio and ask what we charge for Natural Beaded Row extensions, the next question is almost always "why does pricing vary so much between salons?" It is a fair question. You are comparing options, and you want to know if a higher price actually maps to better results or just better marketing.
We are not here to compare ourselves to other salons in Alamo Plaza. We are here to explain what drives our pricing, what you are actually paying for when you book NBR with us, and when the specialist model is worth it versus a traditional full-service salon.
What We Charge (And What Drives It)
Our Natural Beaded Row extensions are priced from a baseline install and scale up based on the number of rows, the hair length you are adding, and whether we are also doing color correction to blend your natural hair into the wefts. Cuts and full balayage are priced from a starting point as well and run higher depending on length, density, and the correction work needed. The specifics live on our service menu.
Our pricing sits above what you will find at many traditional salons in the East Bay. The difference is not arbitrary. It maps to three things: the method, the customization, and the long-term integrity of your hair.
We run a specialist model. Ashley has been doing NBR since 2012. It is her primary craft. Every install is a custom row map built for your head shape, your hair history, and your goals. No pre-set three-row template. We do not offer nails or facials or a menu of twenty services. We do extensions, lived-in color, and cuts that work with extensions. That focus is what you are paying for.
What Happens During an NBR Install (And Why It Takes Longer)
A traditional tape-in or clip-in extension appointment at a volume salon might run ninety minutes to two hours. Our NBR installs run three to four hours for a first appointment, sometimes longer if we are doing color correction at the same time.
Here is what actually happens during that time:
- Consultation and row mapping. We look at your natural hair density, your head shape, where your part sits, and where you have thinning or breakage. We map out how many rows you need, where each row will sit, and how much hair goes in each weft. This is not a template. Every row map is custom.
- Sectioning and bead placement. We section your hair horizontally, isolate the natural hair that will anchor each weft, and thread microbeads onto small sections of that hair. The beads sit flat against your scalp. No glue, no tape, no heat bonds.
- Weft installation. We slide each hand-tied weft through the beads and crimp the beads closed to lock the weft in place. The weft sits flush against your head. When done right, you cannot see the attachment points even when your hair is pulled back.
- Blending and shaping. Once all rows are in, we cut and shape the extensions to blend with your natural hair. If we are also doing color, we tone your natural hair to match the wefts or paint balayage through both to create a seamless blend.
That process is why the appointment runs long. We are not padding time. We are building a system that holds for six to eight weeks between move-ups and lasts a year or longer before the wefts themselves need replacing.
What You Are Actually Paying For (Method Comparison)
The pricing difference between NBR and other extension methods is not about one being "better." It is about longevity, damage risk, and how often you need to come back.
Clip-ins carry the lowest upfront cost and no salon move-up appointments, since you install them yourself, and the damage risk stays low as long as you remove them nightly. The tradeoff is longevity: with daily wear they last roughly 6 to 12 months before the set needs replacing.
Tape-ins sit in the middle on upfront cost but ask the most of your calendar. They need a move-up every 6 to 8 weeks, and the tape itself has to be replaced at each of those visits, so the actual hair turns over frequently. The adhesive also carries a medium damage risk, since tape can pull on the hair when removed.
NBR (Natural Beaded Row) has the highest upfront cost but the longest life. The wefts are reused at every move-up and typically last 12 months or more before replacement, move-ups run on the same 6-to-8 week rhythm as tape-ins, and the damage risk stays low because the beads distribute tension evenly across the row rather than gripping with adhesive.
The upfront cost of NBR is higher. The per-month cost over a year is often lower, because the wefts do not need replacing every few months. You pay for the hair once, then pay for move-up labor every six to eight weeks. A tape-in wearer, by contrast, is buying new tape hair several times a year on top of that same move-up labor, so even though each individual visit can look cheaper, the replacements stack up. Over a full year the two methods often land in a similar place on total spend, but the NBR client has replaced the hair far less often and sat in the chair less frequently.
The math shifts depending on how long you plan to wear extensions and how much your natural hair can handle the adhesive or heat bonds that other methods require.
What We Use (And Why It Costs More)
Every color service we do includes Olaplex. Not as an add-on. Not if you ask for it. It is in the formula. When the integrity of your hair calls for it, we also use K18 mid-process to rebuild the bonds that bleach breaks down.
Our lived-in color is formulated for East Bay sun exposure and hard water. We are painting for a four-to-six-month grow-out, not a six-week cycle. That means more hand-painted pieces, more toning to match your natural base, and more time in the chair. A balayage appointment with us runs three to four hours. The extra hour is the difference between a formula that fades in eight weeks and one that holds.
We retail Oribe home care in-house because it is what we use on your hair in the chair and what we trust to maintain the color and the extensions between appointments. When you ask us what shampoo to use, we hand you the bottle we actually use, not whatever the distributor pushed that month.
When the Specialist Model Is Worth It
If you need a trim, a gloss, or a single-process color and your hair is healthy, a traditional full-service salon is a solid choice. Their pricing reflects a straightforward service model, and if you have a stylist there you trust, consistency with one person beats hopping salons for a marginal difference in technique.
If your budget does not have room for a premium extension service, we are not the right fit. Our pricing reflects the specialist model, and it is a real investment. We would rather you book somewhere you can afford than stretch beyond your means and resent the cost.
But if you have tried extensions elsewhere and they damaged your hair, slipped within weeks, or looked obviously fake, that is where our model makes sense. NBR is a beaded weft method with no glue, no tape, and no heat bonds. The integrity of your natural hair does not take a hit. Move-ups happen every six to eight weeks, and the wefts themselves last a year or longer with proper care.
If you have color-correction needs, box dye to remove, banding to fix, or a previous balayage that grew out with a hard line, we see that almost every week. Color correction is not a quick fix. It takes multiple sessions, careful formulation, and a realistic timeline. Most salons can do corrections, but it is not their primary focus. It is ours.
If you want extensions and color done by the same person in the same chair, that is our entire system. Most salons split those services between two stylists. We do both together because the color has to blend into the wefts, and the wefts have to sit where your natural hair can support them. Splitting that across two people introduces miscommunication and delays.

What to Ask Any Salon You Are Comparing
If you are comparing NBR pricing across salons in Alamo or the East Bay, here are the questions that actually matter:
Is the stylist NBR-certified, and how long have they been installing it? NBR is a specific method with a certification process. A stylist who has been doing it for ten years will build a cleaner row map than someone who learned it six months ago.
What does the install appointment include? Some salons quote the weft cost separately from the install labor. Some include color. Some do not. Ask what the quoted price actually covers.
What happens if a weft slips or a bead loosens between appointments? Most reputable NBR salons will fix a slip within the first two weeks at no charge. Ask what the policy is.
Do you do the color and the extensions, or do I need to book two people? If the answer is two people, ask how they coordinate the formula and the timing. Miscommunication between a colorist and an extension specialist is where blending problems happen.

How much does a consultation cost at your salon?
Our consultations are free. A consultation is where we look at your hair, talk through your goals, and tell you straight whether we can do what you are asking. If we cannot, we will tell you that too. No charge either way.
Can I get my color done somewhere else and then come to you for extensions?
You can, but it creates a problem. When we install extensions, we need to see your natural color, your regrowth line, and your hair history to build a row map and a color formula that blends. If another stylist did your color two weeks before we see you, we are working blind. We would rather do both services together so the formula and the row map are built as one system.
What is included in the NBR install price?
The install price covers the consultation, the row mapping, the bead and weft installation, and the cut and blend at the end. It does not include the cost of the hair itself (wefts are priced separately based on length and volume) or color services if you are also doing balayage or toning. We break those out in the quote so you know exactly what you are paying for.
How long do the wefts last before I need to replace them?
With proper care, the wefts last a year or longer. You bring the same wefts back to every move-up appointment. We remove them, move them up closer to your scalp as your natural hair grows, and reinstall them. When the wefts finally wear out, you replace them, but that is a once-a-year cost, not a every-other-month cost.
If I have been going to another salon for years, is it worth switching?
That depends on whether you are happy with the results and the maintenance cycle. If your color holds, your extensions stay in place, and you trust your stylist, stay. Consistency with one person beats chasing a marginal upgrade. If you are frustrated with how often you need to come back, or your extensions keep slipping, or your balayage fades too fast, then it is worth a consultation with us to see if a different method solves it.
