Your Hair Type Deserves Its Own Routine

One of the biggest mistakes people make with haircare is using the wrong products for their hair type. A product that works beautifully on fine hair can make thick hair greasy. A product that tames thick frizz can flatten fine hair completely. Getting the right routine for your specific hair type makes every single product work better.

We built this guide based on what we actually recommend to clients in our chairs every day. These aren't theoretical routines. They're the exact product combinations we've tested, refined, and proven on real people with real hair over years of working behind the chair.

Find your hair type below and build your perfect Oribe routine.

Routine for Fine Hair

Fine hair needs volume, body, and lightweight products that won't weigh it down. The number one rule: less product, applied in the right places.

Wash Day

  1. Shampoo: Magnificent Volume Shampoo. Lather at the scalp, let it rinse through the lengths. This gives you a clean scalp without stripping your ends.
  2. Conditioner: Magnificent Volume Conditioner. Apply to ends only. Never put conditioner on your roots if you have fine hair. Leave on for 1-2 minutes and rinse completely.

Styling (Blow Dry)

  1. Foundation Mist on damp hair for a smooth base.
  2. Invisible Defense for weightless heat protection.
  3. Blow dry with a round brush, lifting at the roots for volume.
  4. Finish with Dry Texturizing Spray at the roots for all-day lift.

Styling (Air Dry)

  1. Featherbalm Weightless Styler on damp hair, ends only.
  2. Scrunch lightly and air dry.
  3. Dry Texturizing Spray at the roots once dry for body.

Weekly Treatment

Signature Moisture Masque on ends only, once per week. Keep it light. Fine hair doesn't need heavy conditioning.

Products to Avoid

Heavy oils applied near the roots. Rich, thick conditioners used from root to tip. Anything labeled "smoothing" or "anti-frizz" tends to flatten fine hair.

Routine for Thick Hair

Thick hair needs moisture, smoothing, and products with enough weight to tame volume without creating buildup.

Wash Day

  1. Shampoo: Moisture and Control Shampoo. Focus on the scalp, let it rinse through.
  2. Conditioner: Moisture and Control Conditioner. Be generous. Apply from mid-shaft to ends and leave on for 3-5 minutes. Thick hair needs that soak time.

Styling (Blow Dry)

  1. Foundation Mist throughout damp hair.
  2. Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream or Imperial Blowout (quarter-sized amount, worked through thoroughly).
  3. Invisible Defense for heat protection.
  4. Blow dry in sections with a paddle or round brush.
  5. Finish with Gold Lust Hair Oil (2-3 pumps) on ends for shine and smoothing.
  6. Anti-Humidity Spray to seal everything in place.

Styling (Air Dry)

  1. Creme for Style (quarter-sized amount through mid-lengths and ends).
  2. Let air dry completely.
  3. Gold Lust Hair Oil on dry ends for smoothing.

Weekly Treatment

Gold Lust Transformative Masque, mid-shaft to ends, 10-15 minutes. Thick hair can handle the richest conditioning treatment in the line and will benefit enormously from it.

Routine for Curly Hair

Curly hair needs moisture, definition, and products that enhance curl pattern without weighing it down or creating crunch.

Wash Day

  1. Shampoo: Eternal Curls Moisturizing Shampoo (2-3x per week). On off days, use Eternal Curls Cleansing Creme as a co-wash.
  2. Conditioner: Eternal Curls Intense Conditioner. Apply generously, detangle with fingers or wide-tooth comb while it's in. Leave on 3-5 minutes. Optionally leave a small amount in for extra moisture.

Styling

  1. Squeeze out excess water gently. Don't rub with a towel. Use a microfiber towel or old t-shirt instead.
  2. Eternal Curls Polish Protect Oil (1-2 pumps, scrunch in).
  3. Curl Gloss for definition and hold.
  4. Diffuse on low heat, or air dry. Don't touch your curls while they dry.

Refresh (Day 2-3)

  1. Lightly mist hair with water.
  2. Add a tiny amount of Polish Protect Oil to reactivate curl definition.
  3. Scrunch and go.

Weekly Treatment

Eternal Curls Deep Treatment Masque, 10-15 minutes, rinse with cool water. This keeps curls hydrated and bouncy between wash days.

Routine for Color-Treated Hair

Color-treated hair needs gentle cleansing, color preservation, and extra moisture to counteract the drying effects of chemical processing.

Wash Day

  1. Shampoo: Beautiful Color Shampoo (wash no more than 2-3x per week to preserve color).
  2. Conditioner: Beautiful Color Conditioner, mid-shaft to ends, 2-3 minutes.
  3. Monthly: The Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo to remove buildup without excessive color stripping.

Styling

  1. Foundation Mist on damp hair.
  2. Invisible Defense for heat protection (critical for color-treated hair).
  3. Style as usual with your preferred method.
  4. Finish with Gold Lust Hair Oil for shine and UV protection.

Weekly Treatment

Beautiful Color Masque or Gold Lust Transformative Masque depending on your damage level. If your color is recent and hair is healthy, use the Beautiful Color Masque. If your hair is damaged from lightening or multiple color services, use Gold Lust.

For Blondes and Highlighted Hair

Add Silverati Shampoo once per week to neutralize brassiness and keep cool tones bright.

Rinse Temperature

Always rinse color-treated hair with cool or lukewarm water. Hot water opens the cuticle and releases color molecules faster than anything else.

Routine for Hair Extensions

Extensions require gentle handling, specific detangling methods, and products that keep both your natural hair and the extensions in top condition.

Wash Day

  1. Shampoo: Run-Through Detangling Shampoo. The gentle formula and slip prevent tangling at the attachment points during washing.
  2. Conditioner: Signature Conditioner on mid-shaft to ends. Avoid applying directly to bonds, beads, or tape attachments.

Post-Wash Detangling

  1. Run-Through Detangling Primer sprayed throughout.
  2. Use a loop brush or wide-tooth comb. Start from the ends and work up. Never rip through tangles near the attachment points.

Styling

  1. Invisible Defense for heat protection.
  2. Style as usual. Be gentle around attachment points with hot tools.
  3. Gold Lust Hair Oil on ends to keep extensions soft and blended with your natural hair.

Weekly Treatment

Signature Moisture Masque on the extensions (not the bonds) to keep them soft and conditioned. Extensions don't receive moisture from your scalp, so they need external conditioning to stay in good shape.

Bedtime Routine

Always braid or loosely tie your hair before bed. Apply a small amount of Detangling Primer before braiding to prevent overnight tangles.

Routine for Damaged Hair

If your hair has been through bleaching, excessive heat, chemical treatments, or years of neglect, this routine focuses on repair, restoration, and gentle handling.

Wash Day

  1. Shampoo: Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo. Gentle, nourishing, and designed for compromised hair.
  2. Conditioner: Gold Lust Repair and Restore Conditioner. Leave on for 3-5 minutes. Be generous.
  3. Monthly: The Cleanse to remove buildup that blocks repair products from penetrating.

Styling

  1. Foundation Mist for a smooth, conditioned base.
  2. Gold Lust Heat Protection Spray (repair + protection in one).
  3. Lower your heat tools to medium settings. Damaged hair is more vulnerable to heat.
  4. Finish with Gold Lust Hair Oil on ends.

Weekly Treatment (Non-Negotiable)

Gold Lust Transformative Masque, 10-15 minutes under a warm towel. For severely damaged hair, use this twice a week for the first month, then drop to weekly. This masque actively repairs the hair's structure over time, so consistency is key.

The Recovery Timeline

Be patient. Damaged hair doesn't recover overnight. With consistent use of the right products, most clients see noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks. Significant transformation takes 3-6 months. The damaged sections that are beyond repair will need to be trimmed away gradually as healthier hair grows in.

Universal Tips for Every Hair Type

Regardless of your specific hair type, these principles apply to everyone:

  • Don't wash every day. Most hair types benefit from washing 2-3 times per week. Over-washing strips natural oils and forces your scalp to overproduce, creating a vicious cycle.
  • Always use heat protection. No exceptions. Every time you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron. Invisible Defense is the universal choice.
  • Rinse with cool water. Hot water opens the cuticle. Cool water seals it. Your hair will look shinier and feel smoother with a cool rinse.
  • Be gentle when wet. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair. Use a wide-tooth comb, work from the ends up, and never rip through tangles.
  • Get regular trims. Split ends don't repair themselves. Trimming damaged ends every 8-12 weeks keeps your hair looking healthy and prevents splits from traveling up the shaft.
  • Invest in your wash routine first. If you can only upgrade one thing, make it your shampoo and conditioner. Everything starts with a good foundation.
