Article: What Happens at Your First Hair Extension Consultation in Bend?

What Happens at Your First Hair Extension Consultation in Bend?

A first extension consultation with us is a photo, a plan, and a conversation, all before anyone touches your hair. You text us a picture of your hair as it is and a picture of what you want. We send back a plan. Then you book. Nothing gets installed on a guess.

That order matters more than it sounds. Natural Beaded Row extensions sit on a custom row map built for your head shape, your density, and your color. We can't map a head we haven't seen. So here is the whole process, start to finish: what to send, what we check, how long you sit on install day, and what your hair looks like walking out of our Bend chair and again two weeks later.

What does a first extension consultation include?

A first extension consultation at Kinsley + Mane covers four things: your hair history, your hair right now, the result you want, and the routine you can keep up. From those four answers we build a row map, pick a weft count, match color, and explain the commitment. Most of it happens by text before your appointment. We confirm everything in person at our chair inside Tangerine Hair Salon in downtown Bend.

The hair history part surprises people. We want to know what color has been on your hair in the last two years, whether you've worn extensions before and which kind, and whether anything has thinned your hair lately. Postpartum shedding, a hard year, a new medication. None of that disqualifies you. It changes where the rows go and how much hair we put in.

The 'result you want' part is where the inspiration photo earns its keep. One picture tells us more than ten adjectives. 'Long and full' means something different to every person who says it.

We've been doing this since 2012, first at our Alamo, California home salon and now two weeks a month in Bend. Our lead stylist is NBR certified with 13+ years behind the chair. The consult is the same in both places. The hair is not. That is the whole reason to do one at all.

We go deeper on this in What Should You Bring to Your Hair Extension Consultation in Bend?.

How does the process go, from first text to install day?

Seven steps, and none of them are a mystery.

  1. Text us two photos. One of your hair down, in natural light, front and back if you can manage it. One inspiration photo. Done right, we can see your ends, your part, and roughly how dense your hair is.
  2. Tell us your hair history in a few lines. Color in the last two years, past extensions, anything that changed your hair. Short is fine. We'll ask follow-ups.
  3. Wait for the plan. We reply with what we'd recommend: how many rows, whether we'd color first, and a realistic timeline. If we think extensions are the wrong move for your hair right now, we say so here, not on install day.
  4. Ask your questions. This is the moment for 'will it show in a ponytail' or 'what if I hate it.' Nothing is too small. A consult you leave confused from is a consult that didn't work.
  5. Book your install. Our Bend chair runs two weeks out of every month, so we'll give you the dates we're in town and hold your spot. You can request your appointment once the plan makes sense to you.
  6. Read your welcome packet. Every guest gets one before the appointment. It covers how to arrive, what to wash with the night before, and what to skip (no heavy oils, no clarifying shampoo the day of). Done right, you show up with clean, dry, product-free hair and no surprises.
  7. Sit down for the in-person check. Before a single bead goes in, we redo the consult with our hands in your hair. Density, scalp, and the color match held against your real hair under salon light. Then we install.

If you've read our post on what to tell your stylist in a consultation, step two will feel familiar. The same rule applies to extensions. The thing you're embarrassed to mention is usually the thing we most need to know.

What can a photo tell us, and what can only the chair tell us?

In our experience a good photo gets us most of the way there, and the chair gets the rest. Knowing which is which keeps the text consult honest. We won't promise a row count from a picture, and we won't make you drive in from Redmond just to talk.

  • Length and overall shape. From your photo: Yes, reliably. Only in the chair: We refine the blend at your ends.
  • Color and tone. From your photo: A rough match, light dependent. Only in the chair: The real match, held against your hair.
  • Density at the crown and sides. From your photo: A good estimate. Only in the chair: Exact, by feel, which sets the row count.
  • Scalp condition. From your photo: Not visible. Only in the chair: Checked before we commit to a row.
  • Wear from past extensions. From your photo: Sometimes. Only in the chair: Felt along the old attachment line.
  • How your hair moves and lays. From your photo: Guesswork. Only in the chair: Watched as we section, which decides where rows sit.

Color is the one that trips people up. Phone cameras warm everything, and a match made on a screen can land a shade off. That's why we hold the weft against your hair under the salon light before we sew anything in. Our K + M Genius Wefts are Russian hair, and we match them to you, not the other way around. If your own color needs adjusting first, we handle it in the same chair. We wrote about why in color and extensions in one chair, and the logic holds in Bend.

What do we check before we say yes?

We check six things before we agree to install, and any one of them can change the plan.

  • Density where the beads will sit. The crown and the sides carry the rows, so that's where we look hardest. Thin spots don't rule you out. They move the row.
  • Scalp comfort. Tender, flaky, or irritated skin means we wait. Beads on an unhappy scalp are a bad six weeks for you and a loose row for us. We'll usually point you to a scalp routine first. Oribe Serene Scalp is the one we reach for.
  • Active shedding. If your hair is coming out in the shower more than usual right now, we'd rather install in two months than fight it.
  • Strength at the ends. We stretch a few strands. Hair that snaps instead of stretching tells us the color history was rougher than the story.
  • Enough length to hide a row. Your natural hair has to cover the track at the nape. Shoulder length or longer is the easy zone.
  • Your real routine. Daily hot yoga, a hat every day on the trail, swimming three times a week. None of these are deal breakers. All of them change the aftercare we give you.

Here is the honest part. Sometimes the answer is 'not yet.' Hair that's shedding, a scalp that's irritated, or ends that snap on the stretch test will not carry a row well. When that's the case we send you home with The Healthy Hair Blueprint and a date to check back in. Nobody enjoys hearing it. Everybody prefers it to a row that slips at week three.

What is install day like, start to finish?

Plan on three to five hours for a first NBR install without color. Add time if we color first, and expect a color-first day to run long. Bring a snack. We mean that.

The order goes like this. We redo the consult with our hands in your hair, then section and mark where each row will sit. A row starts with a beaded track, small beads threaded onto your own hair in a line. The hand-tied wefts are then sewn onto that track. No glue, no heat, no tape. That's what makes move-ups possible later, because the same wefts come off and go back on.

Once the rows are in, we cut. This is the step people skip in their heads and it's the one that makes extensions look like hair. Your natural ends and the weft ends have to meet, so we blend and shape the whole head together. If you're used to booking a haircut in Bend separately from your extensions, this is the part that changes. The cut is built around the rows.

Then we style, and you see it for the first time.

What does your hair look like leaving, and two weeks later?

Leaving the chair, your hair is full, blended, and styled, and the rows feel snug. That snug feeling is normal for the first two or three nights. You'll notice it most lying down. Sleep in a loose braid and it eases.

You can see how our installs blend at the crown on our Instagram, including the angle nobody else photographs: the back of the head, hair pulled up.

By two weeks the snug feeling is gone and you've done your first few washes. Your welcome packet tells you which Oribe cleanser and conditioner we'd use, and how to keep conditioner off the rows. We're an authorized Oribe salon and we picked that line for a reason. It rinses clean, and clean rows stay tight. Your own hair has grown a little by now. The rows have not moved. That's what a well-mapped row does.

Around six to eight weeks the rows have traveled down with your growth, and that's your move-up. We take the wefts off, move the track back up to the scalp, and sew the same hair back on. Move-ups are the rhythm of living with NBR. Most guests keep their wefts through many move-ups before the hair itself needs replacing. Our post on what happens at month 14 walks through that later stage, and what the investment covers explains why the wefts are the part you buy once.

What if you're only in Bend two weeks a month?

This is the question people are politest about and most worried about. Fair enough. So here is exactly how it works.

We book your move-ups at your install, aligned to the weeks we're in Bend. Six to eight weeks between move-ups means there's almost always a full in-town week that lands in your window. You leave install day with your next date already set.

Between visits, you text us. A bead that feels different, a question about a product, a wedding you forgot to mention. We answer. A hand-tied row that's installed right does not need a stylist in the same zip code every day.

If you'd rather have someone you can drop in on any Tuesday, we'll tell you that plainly and wish you well. Our Bend guests come from downtown, from Redmond, from Sisters, from Sunriver, and they plan the drive around the two weeks we're at our Bend chair. It works because the schedule is known in advance. It would not work if it were a surprise.

What do people get wrong before a consultation?

Four mistakes, and each one costs something specific.

  • Sending a filtered inspiration photo. The filter warms the tone and adds shine that no hair has. We match to it, you don't love it, and we spend a move-up correcting color that was never real. Send the unfiltered version, even if it's less pretty.
  • Leaving out the box dye. We can feel it on the stretch test anyway, so the only thing hiding it buys is a plan built on wrong information. Tell us. We've seen every color that comes in a box.
  • Arriving with product in your hair. Oil or leave-in on install day means the beads don't grip the way they should. That's a row we'd rather not install, and a reschedule that costs you a day. The welcome packet covers this. Read it.
  • Treating the consult as a formality. If you already know you want 'two rows like the photo,' you're skipping the part where we tell you your density calls for one. One row that sits right beats two that pull. The consult is where that gets decided, and it's free to have the conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a first extension consultation take?

The text consult is a handful of messages, often finished the same day you send your photos. The in-person check on install day is a short conversation with our hands in your hair before we begin. You don't need a separate trip to Bend just to consult.

Do I need to color my hair before I get extensions?

Not on your own, and please don't. If your color needs adjusting to match the wefts, we do it in the same chair, either the same day or at a color appointment before your install. Coloring at home right before an install is the fastest way to a mismatch we can't fix that day.

What is the least damaging hair extension method?

In our experience, hand-tied beaded row methods like Natural Beaded Rows are the gentlest, because there's no glue, no heat, and only a few points of contact per row. The weight spreads along the track instead of pulling on individual strands. Damage comes from a poorly mapped row or skipped move-ups, not from the method itself.

How long does an NBR install take in Bend?

Three to five hours for a first install without color. Color-first days run longer, and we'll tell you the estimate when we send your plan. Move-ups are shorter than the first install.

How often will I need move-ups?

Every six to eight weeks for most guests. The rows travel down as your hair grows, and the move-up brings them back to the scalp. We schedule yours at install so it lands in a week we're in Bend.

Can I book if I live in Redmond, Sisters, or Sunriver?

Yes, and many of our Central Oregon guests do exactly that. Plan install day as a full outing and bring something to eat. The text consult means you only drive in when there's hair to install.

What should I bring to my install appointment?

Clean, dry, product-free hair, your inspiration photo on your phone, and any questions your welcome packet raised. A list of what you currently use on your hair helps too. Leave the heavy oils and leave-in conditioner at home that morning.

Can I get a haircut at the same appointment?

Yes. A blending cut is part of every install, because your ends and the weft ends have to meet. If you want a bigger reshape than that, mention it in the consult so we can plan the time.

Ready to start your consultation?

Text us two photos: your hair as it is today, and the hair you want. We'll send back a plan, tell you if now is the right time, and give you the dates we're in Bend. When it makes sense, book your extension consultation and we'll take it from there. Alamo or Bend, same chair, same process.
