How We Choose the Right Hair Extensions for You in Alamo

We choose your hair extensions by looking at two things first: head shape and hair density. Then we match the install to how you live. We never start from a menu.

That order matters. Ask three salons which method is right and you'll hear three answers, because each one describes what it installs. At Kinsley + Mane in Alamo, we describe what your head and your hair can carry.

How do you decide which extensions are right for my hair?

We match the install to your head shape, hair density, strand strength, and goals. That happens in a consultation, before any hair is placed. Then we adapt our own method to you. No two heads are alike, so no single method fits every client. The match comes first, and the plan follows.

Extensions sit on your natural hair, right at the root. How they hold and how they lie against your head depends on you. A layout that suits your friend can sit wrong on yours. A thick head of hair can carry more than fine hair can.

So the consultation is not a sales step. It's where the decision gets made. If extensions won't work for your hair yet, we'll say so before you commit to anything. We don't push a service that doesn't fit.

What do we check on your head and in your hair?

We look at six things, and each one changes the plan.

Head shape

Your skull isn't a smooth ball. The curve at the nape, the rise at the crown, and the width behind your ears all change where hair can sit flat. If your nape dips in sharply, we plan placement so nothing peeks out when your hair is up. We map the placement to those curves so nothing rides on a bump.

That custom mapping is a core part of our method. It's slow work on purpose. A rushed map is one way extensions end up showing in a ponytail.

Hair density

Density is how many strands you have across your scalp. It is not how thick each strand feels. Fine strands can still add up to a full head. We check it section by section.

If we can see scalp through your part, that tells us to keep the added weight light and spread it out. No single spot should carry too much. Higher density gives us more of your own hair to blend into. That gives us more room to place hair where you want it.

Strand strength

Hair that has been lightened many times is more fragile than hair that has never been colored. Extensions add weight, and weak strands feel it. We check how your hair stretches and holds before we plan anything. A strand that snaps instead of springing back tells us to slow down.

Sometimes the right answer is color repair first and extensions later. Other times it's a lighter install. If your real question is whether extensions will hurt your own hair, we answer it on its own in will hair extensions ruin your hair.

Your goal: length, volume, or both

Length and volume are different jobs. If your ponytail feels thin, that's a volume job, and we place hair where yours looks thinnest. For length, the plan shifts toward the ends and the blend. For both, we're matching more hair to more of your head. That changes the hours in the chair and the amount of hair we use.

Tell us which one matters most. That answer shapes the plan more than any other.

Your daily routine

We ask how you wear your hair on an ordinary Tuesday. A high ponytail every morning? A workout most days? Air-dry and go? A lot of our clients are busy moms and working women who live in a ponytail. A daily high pony means we plan the nape and hairline so nothing shows when you pull it up.

Your hair should look pretty down and up. A plan that ignores your routine fails by week three.

Your color

Extensions have to match your color, and your color keeps shifting as it grows out and fades. A fresh gloss today and softer ends a month from now are two different matches. We do color and extensions in the same appointment with the same specialist. That way one person is responsible for how the whole head blends.

If you're planning balayage or lived-in color, tell us up front. Whether balayage suits your hair in the first place is its own decision, and is balayage right for your hair explains how we judge it. Coloring the extension hair itself is a separate question, covered in whether extension hair can be colored.

Why don't we name a method before we meet you?

The name on a menu tells us nothing about your head. Ashley Pollard, our owner, has 18+ years behind the chair. She and our team are certified in multiple extension methods. From that training we built our own way of installing, because every head shape and every density asks for something different.

Ashley has personally installed our extensions on thousands of clients over 7+ years. That's why we adapt the method to you instead of fitting you to a method.

The hair matters as much as the install. We use Kinsley + Mane Genius Wefts, our own extension hair line. It's Russian hair of luxury quality, and we've used it for 7+ years. We know how it behaves and how it wears. You can see our recent extension work on our Instagram, posted only with each client's consent.

What happens at your extensions consultation?

The consultation is a conversation and a close look at your hair. It comes before any decision about the install. Here's the order we follow.

  1. Tell us what you want: length, volume, or both. Done right, you leave this step with one clear goal.
  2. Show us your hair the way you wear it day to day. Come as you are. We need your real hair, not a styled version.
  3. Walk us through your week. Ponytails, workouts, wash days, how long you give yourself in the morning.
  4. Let us check your head shape, density, and strand strength. This is the hands-on part, and it takes the time it takes.
  5. Look at the plan with us. We cover the method we'll adapt, the amount of hair, the color match, and where the hair will sit.
  6. Hear the time and the move-up schedule before you decide. Done right, you know how long the install will take, when your first move-up falls, and what drives the cost.

How long your install takes depends on how much hair we add and whether color is part of the visit. We give you that time at the consultation. Cost works the same way. The amount of hair, the hours in the chair, and any color all shape the quote. Current pricing lives on our service menu.

When you're ready, book your consultation. If it's your first time with us, what to expect at Kinsley + Mane walks through the visit.

What if you're worried the result won't match what you asked for?

The consultation is how we make sure the result matches what you asked for. The worry is fair, and we hear versions of it often. Plenty of people have asked a stylist for a specific tone or look. They walked out with something close but wrong.

We agree on the plan before any work begins. We don't push a service that doesn't fit your hair. And we're careful about promises. A saved photo shows someone else's density, color, and head shape. So we tell you how your hair will differ from it.

One of our clients put it this way in a Google review: "This is a team that knows how to get things done the way you want it. I felt heard and seen and my hair goals are executed." That's the standard we hold ourselves to. It starts with listening before we place a single piece of hair.

What do people get wrong when they choose extensions?

Most regrets we hear about trace back to the decision, not the hair. These are the six we see most.

  • Choosing by method name. A name tells you what a salon installs, not whether it suits your head.
  • Shopping on the quote alone. The hair, the mapping, and the hours in the chair are what you pay for. When a quote is much lower, ask which of those got cut.
  • Asking for more hair than your density can carry. More weight on fine hair strains the strands underneath. We'd rather build in stages.
  • Keeping color plans quiet. If you're about to go lighter or add balayage, the match changes. Say so at the start.
  • Ignoring tightness. Extensions should feel like nothing. If something pulls, tell us that day.
  • Skipping the move-up. This one costs the most, and it's the next section.

What does upkeep look like after we choose your extensions?

Plan on a move-up every 6 to 8 weeks. It's required, and we don't bend on it.

Here's why. Hair grows about half an inch a month on average. Within that window your install moves down and away from your scalp. Left longer, the natural hair underneath can start to tangle and mat around it. The move-up repositions the install back at your root. It's the single biggest thing that protects your own hair.

One set of our extensions usually lasts nine months to a year, as long as the move-ups happen on schedule. For what stretches or shortens that, see how long extensions last and what changes the timeline.

At home, wash gently and keep conditioner off the root area. Our guide on washing extensions without loosening them covers the angle of the water and the hand motion. We're an authorized Oribe salon, and we point extension clients to the Eternal Curls Mask for care.

Two weeks in, your extensions should sit flat, move with your hair, and feel like nothing. If the look isn't what you pictured, read what to do if you don't love your extensions. Then call us. Don't wait for the move-up.

Who shouldn't get extensions yet?

Some hair needs work first, and we'll tell you.

If your hair is fragile from repeated lightening, we may recommend repair and color work before any install. If you want more hair than your density can carry, we'll suggest a smaller step. And if you can't keep up with regular move-ups, extensions aren't the right fit for you right now. The schedule is part of the service.

We'd rather send you home with a plan than place hair that won't hold. That's also why our consultation comes first.

Our service area covers Danville, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, and Moraga. Our salon at 225 Alamo Plaza is a short drive from each. If you're coming from Danville, our page on hair extensions near Danville covers what to plan for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the least damaging hair extension method? The least damaging method is the one matched to your head shape, density, and strand strength. We don't rank methods in the abstract, because the same install can suit one head and strain another. Damage tends to come from a poor match, too much weight, or skipped move-ups.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for extensions? You're likely a good candidate if your hair is strong enough to carry added weight and you can keep up with move-ups. We confirm it at the consultation by checking head shape, density, and strand strength. If you aren't a match yet, we'll tell you what to work on first.

Can I get extensions if I have thin or fine hair? Yes, if your density can carry them. Fine strands can still add up to a full head. We keep the install light and spread out, and we'll tell you plainly if we think your hair can't hold it.

How much hair will I need? The amount depends on your density and your goal, and we set it at the consultation. Adding volume to fine hair takes a different amount than adding length to a thick head. We map it to your head so you don't take on more than your hair can carry.

How long do hair extensions typically last? One set of our extensions usually lasts nine months to a year, with move-ups on schedule along the way. The move-ups are what carry a set through. Skipping them shortens the life of the install and strains your natural hair.

Can I get color and extensions done at the same appointment? Yes. We do color and extensions in the same appointment with the same specialist, so the blend is planned as one look. Tell us about any color plans when you book your consultation.

What should I do if I don't love how my extensions look? Give them a few days to settle, then call us. We'd rather adjust than have you live with something you don't like. Tell us exactly what feels off, whether it's the placement, the color, or the way they sit.
